This Rock Sound contents page has many features that make it
successful such as the way that the page numbers are displayed in a different
colour to the information about what is going to be on that certain page. Also
the font used is very bold and clear to read so the reader won’t have any
trouble finding what they want. It has a main image that makes up the
background and the contents information is displayed on a semi-transparent
block where you can see a little bit of the image behind it through the block.
The issue number and magazine date are also displayed on the
contents which is a good feature to have as it is introducing which issue it is
on the introductory page to the magazine. Underneath the band name next to the
page number there is a little piece of information of what to expect on the
specific page so you could just read that piece of information a then find it
by using the page numbers.
On the main image of the contents page there is a pull quote
from one of the articles and also the age number to that specific page in case
the reader wants to read on and find out more. The contents is still meeting
the target audience as the man pictured is of the metal style with his tattoos
and body piercings which are both stereotypical for someone of that genre. The
contents also features the name of the magazine and page numbers at the bottom
of the page which is an effective little touch as it helps the reader know
which page they are on and also lets them remember what they are reading and helps
advertise their company.
In my own magazine I
would like to use some of the features I have picked up from this style model,
for example I would like to use the coloured page numbers and the bold text of
what is going to be in the magazine to make it an ease to read. Another feature
I have picked up is the page number and magazine name in very small font in the
bottom corner; I would like to replicate this when creating my own contents
page for my project.
This contents page has quite a simple design and has many
conventions to it that make it successful, for example the simple and bold text
make it completely obvious that it is a contents page. The page numbers have
been placed in the margin and are a different colour from the rest, which makes
it very easy to point out where different parts of the magazine are. The whole
structure of the text on the contents is in a blocked form which makes it look
tidy and well presented. The contents page feature the date and which volume
the magazine is which is helpful for people who may like to collect magazines
so they know which issue it is.
There is a main photo of the Green Day lead singer making a
funny and immature pose which gives the magazine a laid back feel to it and
gives him a humorous personality. The headphones he is wearing act as a prop to
show that it is a music magazine and the fact he is in a rock band helps define
the genre of music and who the magazines target audience is. They also have
their website at the top to help advertise it and is there in case anyone wants
more information about the band Green Day.
In my own project I have taken some inspiration from this
article to possibly have a large photo presenting the magazine and possibly
have some sort of musical prop to show that the magazine is of musical genre. I
also like the block text which is featured to show a side of formality which is
contrasted by the childish pose by the musician displayed on the right hand
side.
On this contents page there are many features which
make it unique, for example this magazine not only used words to describe what
is going to be on the page but at the top the use of photos is very effective
as it gives another way of showing what will be on the page through photos. The
title of the contents page has a very unique font and it seems to have been
eroded away and had bit of it cut out to give it the edgy rock look that
would’ve been shown on the front cover page and carried out throughout the
whole magazine to show continuity. There is a large image of a singer who is
featured in the magazine and the page number of the article that he is involved
is also displayed in a small caption next to the photo.
There is a common use of dark colour used throughout
to meet up to the genre of metal rock, this certain magazine seems to have a
more masculine based target audience with the language use, for example the use
of words such as ‘spooked’ and ‘scary’ wouldn’t appeal as much towards the
female population.
I would like to use the idea of having a photo on
the contents page of something that is involved within the magazine and have
the page number next to it. Also I like the idea of how the edgy font is used
to show the genre and appeal to the target audience. I also like how the colour
scheme matches up to everything involved in the contents, for example the red
and black text matches up with the box around the title.
This Kerrang! Contents page has many key unique features
which make it a successful product. For example the rough edge makes it look as
it has been ripped out of something and just put there, it gives it the edgy
rock/metal feel to it.
There is a unique way of displaying page numbers shown on
this contents with the red shapes with arrows pointing to a picture of what
will be inside which have a little caption telling us more, they also have the
name of the bands album Riot! In big letters which lets the audience see who it
is about. The magazine kerrang! Have chosen to use the same house style as the
front cover (displayed in the top left) which displays continuity and makes it
look tidier and have a more presentable appearance. They have the kerrang!
website displayed in the text for people who may want to find out more
information. Another key feature is the black and white bars which have been
added to tell the reader more about what will be on the specific page; these
are in a very clear text and are easy to read. There are pictures of the band
without any captions telling the reader that the band are pictured apart from
the album name which shows that the target audience is people who listen to the
band Paramore and have a good knowledge of the rock metal music genre.
From analysing this contents page I have found many key
structure points that I would like to use in my own design, such as the use of
arrows and pictures which are a very effective way to display the contents
page. I would also like to display my photos in an offset and messed up manner
to show my genre and achieve an edgy rock look to my magazine.
This contents page has only one image and due to the target
audience being rock fans, they would recognise the band as being the rolling
stones straight away without needing the title. The contents has all the
regular codes and conventions such as the issue numbers and the date of the magazine.
The font of the Contents title is very similar to the one of the Rolling Stones
which is effective as it links it all in.
They have also used a slightly grainy black and white photo
to give the photo age as it was taken of the band back when they were in their
prime. In the jagged text box they have used the Classic Rock logo of the small
lightning bolt to show the house style throughout the magazine. They have kept
the entire colour in with each other and have used red for the page numbers in
the same colour to keep it looking professional. The editor has added a small
caption at the bottom incase someone reading the magazine isn’t familiar with
the rolling stones and would like to know more about them. Mick Jagger is looking straight at the camera
and there is a quote from the band which makes it seem as though they are
speaking to the reader.
I would like to replicate some of the
conventions I have analysed in this contents page in my own piece, one of them
being the use of a small photo caption at the bottom in the corner to show the
reader who is pictured and maybe tell them a little more about them. Also I
would like to use the idea of having a similar font for the contents title to
the bands logo which would show a correlation between the two and help appeal
to my target audience and show that they are of a similar genre.
